The clock points to the “present,” yet the “present” cannot remain. The burning of the three incense-stick hands makes this inability to remain perceptible as change.
The hands of a clock continuously point to a specific position, which we understand as the “present.”
But the hands cannot remain there. They continue to move, and each “present” they have just reached is immediately replaced by the next.
In the work, the hands are made of incense sticks. As they move, they continue to burn, becoming shorter as the material continuously changes.
Burning is a process that actually takes place in time. Through burning, the originally invisible and ungraspable “present” becomes a state that can be perceived.
