Incense-burning installation

Transforming a real candlestick into an oil painting.
While the painting was still wet, a real incense stick was placed into the candlestick depicted in the painting. Once the oil paint had fully dried, the incense stick was lit. Smoke and ash entered the painted scene, eventually leaving traces of the burning incense.
The real incense stick steps into the painting, and with it, time enters the image.

Once the candlestick is painted, it is no longer a candlestick that can be used, but simply an image of one. The incense stick, however, remains real. It does not enter a real object, but a space that has been depicted.
Reality and image therefore meet within the same frame.
The burning of the incense is not a depiction of an action, but a process that actually takes place on the surface of the painting. The smoke, scent, ash, and passage of time it brings do not belong to the traditional language of painting, yet gradually become part of the image.
The painted candlestick is thus given a real use.
When the incense stick has completely burned away, that use also comes to an end. What remains is not an image of burning, but evidence that the burning once took place.
The relationship between the objects is pushed further, toward the space between reality and image.
